Colegio de La Milagrosa 1

The Colegio de la Milagrosa is one of the best examples of school architecture in the Canary Islands from the first third of the twentieth century, based on the postulates of monumental architecture. The school was built to make up for the lack of space in the original school buildings, and was an initiative of the Compañía de las Hijas de la Caridad de San Vicente de Paúl. The school’s superior, Sister María de la Soledad Cobián, began to arrange for a building of great proportions to be erected on land devoid of surrounding buildings. The result was a large quadrangular block notable for its use of reinforced concrete to simulate stone cornices, mouldings and other architectural elements. The complex contains, over different heights, the area reserved for the community, the chapel and classrooms for teaching. A particular highlight is the main façade, with an elegant double staircase that overcomes the differences in height.
