Ayuntamiento - Palacio Municipal 1

The demolition of the old Poor Clares Convent of San José after Mendizábal’s decrees of ecclesiastical confiscation led to this enormous block being reinterpreted; the result was the creation of four new spaces. These included the town hall building, fronted by a large plaza, and at the back the Hijuela del Jardín Botánico (botanic garden) occupies the site of the old convent gardens.

The town hall is the best example of neoclassical architecture in La Orotava, owing to its layout designed by Pedro Maffiotte and Manuel de Oraá. It is articulated around a central portico with triple balcony inspired by romantic classicism, and crowned by an elegant triangular pediment.

The current plaza was created from a design by Mariano Estanga (1912) and showcases the elegant creations from the sculpture and ornamentation workshop of Francisco Granados Calderón.
