36 Casa Torre Hermosa - Artenerife

Casa Torre Hermosa - Artenerife 1

Originally part of the adjoining Casa Mesa, this building was separated off as an independent property. It is a seventeenth-century structure built over the earlier house from the sixteenth century, in keeping with the principles of Canarian architecture of the time. The house ended up in the hands of the Marqués de Villanueva del Prado and, at the beginning of the twentieth century, it became the property of Francisco Betancourt y del Río, who thoroughly renovated the façade. The front door retains the coat of arms of the Mesa, Lugo, Ayala, Llarena Calderón and Cabrera families.

Today it is owned by the Tenerife Island Council which, at the end of the last century, established the Empresa Insular de Artesanía S.A. there, a body responsible for preserving and enhancing the craftsmanship of the island.
