Casa Cólogan 1

This site was originally occupied by Casa Franchy Fonte del Castillo, razed by a fire in the middle of the eighteenth century. In around 1753 the current mansion was built, notable for its size and its gardens. Its gardens werepraised by travellers such as the French naturalist André Ledru. In the nineteenth century an extension was added by politician Tomás Fidel Cólogan, who inherited it from Rosalía Pía de Franchy, III Marquesa de la Candia. This family not only gave the house its name but also the street on which it stands, formerly called calle del Hospital or calle de las Monjas. Highlights include profuse exterior and interior woodwork, especially the coffered ceilings. The uniqueness of the stone staircase, which levels out the steep road, has led to it being known locally as the casa de los escalones (“house of the steps”).
