After the demolition of the Convent of San Jose in the third quarter of the nineteenth century the decision was taken to build a large plant nursery in the space that had been previously occupied by the nuns’ garden, thus preserving this large plot of land from urban speculation. It is bounded around its perimeter by a fence from the Hermanos Pérez factory in Seville, paid for with the help of the Ministry of Public Works. The gateway is the most interesting architectural element: a sinuous ironwork design that seems to match the capricious natural forms of the varied flora contained within. These gardens cultivate species as an extension to the Acclimatisation Botanical Gardens of La Orotava, now located in the municipality of Puerto de la Cruz.
