Casas Históricas 1

This unique setting is a representative spot in the history of La Orotava, insofar as it is located in the old way of El Calvario, which was the route in and out of the Villa for centuries. Plus, it hosts buildings of historic value, such as the remains of the old hospital of San Sebastián, built over an old 16th-century chapel, or the buildings 52 and 54, which are remarkable examples of the 18th-century Mudejar-style Canarian domestic architecture: balconies, tile-roof eaves and woodwork.

The Plaza de Franchy Alfaro, designed by the Master Aarón Luis de Otazo, occupies what used to be the San Sebastián plain, dominating the whole area. The wooden cross that can be found in one of its sides is worthy of note. According to oral tradition, this used to be the site of an old scaffold, and for this reason it is known as "cruz de los ahorcados" (cross of the hanged). In this sense, the cross must have given convicts their last spiritual relief.
