Colegio Salesiano San Isidro 1

The need for a quality school in the early twentieth century led English-born La Orotava resident John Stirling to propose to the Town Council that they create a public school on land donated by Nicandro González y Borges. The building was designed by Mariano Estanga, who created an elegant monumental compound that abounded with historical references. The school’s patron was San Isidro Labrador, due to the links between agriculture and the society of La Orotava. After 1909 the school was run by the Hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas (Hermanos de la Salle), but after they departed, it was taken over by the Salesian congregation, who have run the school from 1948 to the present day.
